To begin your preparation, you should be aware about the CAT 2025 Exam pattern and the syllabus for CAT Exam

Can I switch the sections while giving CAT Exam?

No. You are not allowed to switch among the sections while giving the exam. The student gets 40 Minutes to solve each section and the section is automatically submitted once the time is over.

What is the syllabus of the CAT Exam?

CAT consists of three sections;

Quantitative Aptitude: This section is divided into Arithmetic, Geometry, Number System, Modern Maths & Algebra

VARC: This majorly covers Reading Comprehension passages along with some topics like Para Summary, Para Completion & Para Jumbles

DILR: This section has sets, which are mix of both DI & LR part and has topics like Bar Graph, Line Graph & Pie Chart. It also has puzzles on variety of topics like Team formation, Matrix, Binary logic, Arrangements, Set Theory. etc.

How Many Questions are there in the CAT Paper?

CAT paper consists of 66 Questions.

The VARC section of CAT includes 24 Questions for 72 Marks

The DILR sections of CAT has 22 Questions for 66 Marks

The Quantitative Aptitude 20 Questions for 60 Marks

Is there any negative marking for CAT Exam? What is the Marking Scheme for CAT Exam?

Yes, there is negative marking for the CAT Exam.

For every correct answer you get +3 Marks. For every incorrect answer you get -1 Mark

For Unattempted questions you get 0 Marks. For TITA Based questions you have no negative marking.

What types of questions are asked in the CAT Exam? What are TITA Questions in CAT Paper?

There are two types of questions in the CAT Exam:

Multiple Choice Questions: You have four options to choose your answer from.

TITA: You have to type your answer in the box given below the question. There are no options given for such questions. There is no negative marking for TITA Questions

How many months are needed to prepare and crack the CAT Exam?

The number of months depends on your intensity of preparation and level of understanding. Usually, a student who starts his preparation from scratch needs a period of 6-9 months to cover the entire syllabus and prepare in detail. The last 1-2 months are dedicated to attempt mocks and improve your mock scores by revisiting the topics you face issue in and trying to improve your accuracy.

How do I Manage CAT Preparation with college or office?

If you are studying in a college or working, then it is very important for you to have a proper weekly time-table maintained for each section. You can take 4-6 hours from your week days and utilize your weekends to study each section and give mocks and do mock analysis. Usually a 4-6 hours a day is enough to cover the entire syllabus and crack CAT exam in 6-8 months.

How many mocks should I attempt?

There is no such definite number as the mocks are to be used to assess the level of preparation and identify the strong and weak areas you have in every section.

25-40 Mocks are considered a good number of mocks, if you are targeting top colleges through the CAT

What are the top colleges through the CAT Exam?

There are two categories of colleges you can apply through the CAT Exam:

IIMs: IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIM Lucknow and Baby & New IIM’s

Top Non-IIM Colleges through CAT: IIFT, FMS Delhi, S.P Jain, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, TISS (HRM), IMT Ghaziabad and others.

What is the Selection process for IIM / IIM’s?

The selection process for IIM Colleges through CAT Exam is:

The candidate needs to attempt CAT Exam and should score the required percentile for the respective colleges through CAT Exam

After the results of the CAT is announced, the candidate gets individual calls from the IIMs and needs to fill the college form only after which he/she is eligible for the next round of the process

The second round of process involves multiple rounds like Group Discussions, SOP Writing, WAT (Written Ability Test) and Personal Interview.

On the basis of the aggregate score scored by the aspirant in all the rounds he/she is selected in the respective institute(s).
